Description
A superb and rare photo of twoLaverda 75
riders, just before the start of a stage of the legendary
1954
edition of the
Milano - Taranto roadrace
in Italy. They are seen departing the main square at the historic centre of the Northern Italian city of
Bologna
.
The extremely heavy Milano-Taranto (or MiTa) roadrace ran from the North to the South of Italy, a length of circa
800 miles
(1,300 km’s), starting was at
midnight
in the city of
Milan
, the finish at the city of
Taranto
. The riders had to cross mountain passes, coastal roads, short curves, long curves, and road surfaces that were barely rideable at stretches.
The two riders are both riding the Laverda 75 single cylinder four stroke bike. A very popular mount at the time for the Italian long distance racing events in the 75cc class. In 1954 the race was won by Galliani on a Capriolo, but numbers 2 to 6 were all Laverda 75 riders. In
1954 a
total of 42 riders started in the 75cc class. Of them 27 rode Laverda’s. Besides Capriolo also Ceccato, amnd Verga machines started.
Fastest Laverda rider was Marchi, he needed a time of 16 hours, 11 minutes and 8 seconds to cover the distance…
The Laverda 75 featured a 75cc ohv engine. It first appeared in
1948. In
1951 it appeared as a factory prepared racing machine in
Milan
-
Taranto
. It retired, but factory boss Francesco Laverda was prepared to give it another go in 1952. With success, as it won with might the 75cc class!
This is your rare chance to own this
non period
photo that reflects a very interesting and highly historic piece of both Laverda and Milano Taranto’s legendary history. Therefore it is printed in a nice large format of ca. 6.4" x 9.3" (ca. 16.
3 x 23
.8 cm).
In the

, Laverda was also marketed under the American Eagle name.
