    Description

A superb and rare photo of both versions of the famous
    Ducati 600 TT2 Formula 2 racer
    from
    1981
    .
On the right, we see a
    factory racer
prepared for the 1981 TT Formula 2 world championship racing season.
With this machine Tony Rutter would become TT Formula 2 world champion of 1981.
On the left we see a
    Ducati 600 Pantah
    fitted with the
    factory TT2 kit
. Notice the stock fairing on that machine.
    The new
    Ducati 600TT2
production racer was derived from the 600cc version of the Ducati Pantah. It was with the works version of this magnificent machine that
    Tony Rutter
    became
    World Champion TT Formula 2
    in
    1981
    (its debut year!),
    1982
    ,
    1983
    and
    1984
    .
    George Fogarty,
father of 1990s World Champion Superbike (WSB) Carl Fogarty (!!)
, finished with his Ducati 600TT2 in 1982 2ND behind Tony Rutter in the World Championship TT Formula Two!
In the early 1970’s, long distance racing was extremely popular in Europe. These events were responsible for the quick gaining popularity of the heavier sports motorcycle, like the Ducati 750 SS, the Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, The Moto Guzzi 850 Le Mans and the Benelli 650 Tornado, the BMW R 90 S Daytona and the Laverda SFC 750; but also the Japanese sports motorcycles like the Kawasaki 350, 500 and 750 triples, but also heavy four strokes like the Honda CB 750 Four. Riders that would make world fame, like Franco Uncini and Marco Lucchinelli, all participated in these races before they made the steps to the Grand Prix World Championship racing scene. The foundation for today’s Superbike racing series was laid in the 1980’s, when the TT Formula 1 and TT Formula 2 racing classes became very popular. Ducati had with the 600 TT2 a formidable machine that inspired many Pantah 350 , Pantah 500 and Pantah 600 owners into building a magnificent TT2 Special. Frame manufacturers like Daspa and Verlicchi made wonderful components for this.
